Splendeurs et misères d’une duchesse anglaise : en s’emparant pour son premier opéra des relations adultères de la duchesse d’Argyll, Thomas Adès, jeune compositeur de 24 ans, savait pouvoir s’attirer une part du parfum de scandale suscité en son temps par l’affaire. Et ce d’autant qu’il n’hésite pas à recourir à un naturalisme musical assumé. Mais l’intérêt de l’œuvre, au-delà du livret concis, modèle du genre, de Philip Henscher, tient à la vivacité de l’écriture, qui regarde avec insistance vers Stravinsky et fait des quatre solistes et d’un ensemble de quinze musiciens la matrice où la musique se réinvente sans cesse en puisant dans une large palette de genres musicaux. Julien Chavaz signe la mise en scène, après avoir révélé The Importance of being earnest de Gerald Barry en mai 2019.
