Un homme jeune, seul, en costume-cravate, dans ce qui pourrait être son bureau. Son bureau, ou peut-être sa cellule… Enfermé dans cette pièce-boîte, sous l’œil implacable d’une lumière qui ne le quitte pas une seconde, l’homme ne fera, tout au long de ce solo d’une heure, que réagir aux contraintes de ce cadre spatial dont les murs et le plafond se rapprochent, par à-coups brutaux, les uns des autres. Petit à petit, il est amené, pour « tenir » dans l’espace alloué, à investir les diagonales, à tenir sur la tête, à se tordre et à faire de chaque mur un point d’appui : c’est un véritable tour de force que cette chorégraphie, à la fois burlesque, savoureuse et inquiétante.
Le danseur cependant reste impassible, affichant une surprenante absence de rébellion ou de crainte face à l’issue inéluctable : finir écrasé entre les murs. C’est sans doute le plus troublant : la prison n’est pas seulement dans la boîte (un dispositif magistral conçu par Frédéric Stoll) qui enserre le danseur. Elle réside dans l’homme lui-même, dont le mouvement, comme son environnement, est marqué par une soumission à des automatismes non interrogés. La danse de Pierre Rigal se fait alors réflexion politique : la tragédie, évoquant Kafka en danse, commence peut-être lorsqu’on incorpore un mécanisme oppressif. Et le chorégraphe de résumer, en décrivant son personnage : « Il est perdu dans son propre crâne. »
