Un pied à Abidjan, l’autre à Marseille, Eva Doumbia — artiste d’origines franco-ivoiriennes — travaille à des spectacles esthétiquement et culturellement hybrides. Cela, par le biais de ses deux compagnies : La Part du pauvre en France, Nana-Triban en Côte d’Ivoire. Créée au Burkina Faso, à Ouagadougou, Primitifs, about Chester Himes parle d’amour, de différence, d’incompréhension, de séduction, des fantasmes érotiques que nourrissent certain(e)s Noir(e)s à l’égard des Blanc(he)s, certain(e)s Blanc(he)s à l’égard des Noir(e)s, de l’Amérique multiraciale des années 1950, de nos sociétés contemporaines, des sentiments qui peuvent habiter les individus métissés ou issus de minorités ethniques. Pour cela, la représentation conçue et mise en scène par Eva Doumbia fait appel à des éléments scéniques et textuels disparates : narration, jeu théâtral, improvisation, danse… / fragments de romans, éclaircissements biographiques, interventions des comédiens sur leur propre expérience du métissage… Des éléments inégaux qui peinent parfois à nourrir les questionnements que souhaite soulever la metteure en scène.
Un « spectacle-mosaïque » tentant d’allier ironie et réflexion
Car si Massidi Adiatou, Fargass Assandé, Jocelyne Monier, Nanténé Traoré et Eva Doumbia parviennent à créer quelques beaux moments de compositions dramatiques ou d’improvisations, ces éclats de drôlerie et de réflexions font face à d’autres tentatives : celles-ci plus banales, moins abouties. Rompant à de multiples reprises le fil de l’action théâtrale — qui renvoie aux écrits et aux personnages de l’écrivain américain — les interprètes ouvrent en effet les possibles de la représentation en se soumettant, certes, au charme de l’imprévu, mais également au péril du manque d’inspiration. Un péril qui peut entraîner la représentation dans une forme de désordre et de dilution, d’aplatissement des sujets abordés. Ce manque de profondeur, d’acuité, restreint le champ des prises de conscience que sont censées faire naître les diverses facettes du spectacle, mais n’empêche nullement les bonnes intentions de transparaître. Conférant à Primitifs, about Chester Himes des accents indéniablement sincères, assurément généreux, ce sont elles qui justifient l’ensemble du projet.
