Au début 1855, le Maître Peintre d’Ornans, Gustave Courbet, travaille pour l’Exposition Universelle de Paris dans l’atelier de son village natal en présence d’un modèle féminin. De passage à Besançon, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon fait un détour dans la région pour visiter Courbet. L’argument du spectacle mis en scène par Jean Pétrement tourne autour du souhait du peintre : obtenir la caution intellectuelle du philosophe qu’il admire. Proudhon semble développer une estime moindre à l’égard des œuvres de Courbet. À l’intérieur de ce huis clos de l’atelier d’Ornans, les deux figures s’affrontent. Un dialogue auquel se joignent d’un côté, Jenny, la femme modèle émancipée qui n’impressionne guère le philosophe misogyne, et de l’autre, un paysan braconnier enclin aux idées conservatrices. Qui modèle l’autre ? Le philosophe fait-il le peintre ou bien le peintre le philosophe ? La rencontre scénique de ces monstres sacrés n’exclut ni l’humour ni la légèreté.
