C’est en musardant au gré d’A la recherche du temps perdu que Roland Petit composa, en 1974, Proust ou les intermittences du cœur, ballet néoclassique entré au répertoire à l’Opéra national de Paris en 2007. Plutôt qu’essayer de sertir l’œuvre tout entière en deux actes et treize tableaux, il a choisi ses motifs : les élans et les tourments du désir amoureux. « Il me semblait que des « moments » de danse pouvaient naître si, comme on pose le doigt sur un fil, on arrêtait le déroulement du récit à l’instant où les personnages se trouvent au plus intense de ce qui les liait ou les opposait, ou, tout au contraire, à l’instant où se présente ce que ces pages offraient de plus impalpable, de plus fugitif, à peine une couleur, un parfum passager, des impressions en demi-teintes. ». Construit sur des musiques de compositeurs adulés par Proust, de Beethoven à Wagner en passant par Saint-Saëns ou Debussy, ce ballet en blanc et noir, de plus en plus sombre et spectral, évoque par fragments les ardeurs et pulsions qui saisissent les corps.
