On découvrait il y a un an ce nouveau spot sur la cartographie jazzistique de la région Île-de-France avec cette manifestation unique en Europe dédiée à l’œuvre de Duke Ellington. Laurent Mignard, chef d’orchestre du Duke Orchestra et directeur artistique du Duke Festival, rappelle que « depuis sa première tournée en 1933, Duke Ellington a toujours eu une grande affinité avec la France » et que, bien des années plus tard, en juillet 1970, « Duke Ellington se produisit avec son orchestre à Provins pour ce qui fut cette année-là son unique concert en France ». La programmation structurée autour de quelques temps forts (André Manoukian quartet, le trio de chanteuses Doodlin’ attaché au jazz des années 40 et enfin le Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra pour un Bal Swing final) est complétée par un concours de compositeurs se réclamant de l’héritage de Duke Ellington. Ils auront à présenter une oeuvre originale pour un big band jazz de quinze musiciens, mettant en scène les fondamentaux compositionnels de Duke Ellington, dont le lien fort avec l’univers de la danse.
