Le performeur et plasticien sud-africain a toujours été à la fois sujet et objet de ses œuvres, mêlant sa poésie visuelle et gestuelle à un acte politique fort, voire provocant. Il lui arrive de convoquer ses proches dans son travail, comme la figure de son frère suicidé, ou sa propre nounou, présente sur scène dans The Cradle of Humankind. Mais dans cette performance de 2017, c’est Elu, le compagnon de 20 ans de vie, qui apparaît. Steven Cohen nous invite à partager une forme de cérémonie d’adieu à ce danseur trop tôt disparu, et à suivre cette étrange marche, faite d’équilibres instables, au-dessus d’une marée d’objets représentant leur existence commune. Acte d’une grande beauté ancré dans la douleur, sa déambulation ne peut pour autant conjurer la mort ; elle s’effectue comme un rite de passage pour ceux qui restent, une cérémonie de sang et de larmes prompte à nous faire réfléchir sur l’amour et le manque de façon universelle.
