Comment cette mise en crise de la fiction, du personnage, résonne-t-elle aujourd’hui ?
Stéphane Braunschweig : Le théâtre post-dramatique a déconstruit le personnage en tant qu’identité fictive définie par une psychologie, inscrite dans une narration. Aujourd’hui, les gens ne cessent paradoxalement de se recréer des personnages, notamment en déterminant leur « profil » sur les réseaux sociaux comme Facebook. Notre époque où règne le « storytelling » fabrique de la fiction au cœur du réel. La pièce questionne aussi la notion de vérité, toujours relative car subjective chez Pirandello : les êtres fictionnels nés de l’imaginaire de l’auteur prétendent apporter la vérité et perturbent la réalité où ils ont surgi.
Pourquoi et comment avez-vous adapté la pièce ?
S. B. : Pour rester fidèle à Pirandello, il fallait le trahir. Sa pièce, écrite en 1921, porte une charge satirique contre le théâtre bourgeois en vogue à cette époque-là, qui désormais nous apparaît complètement désuet, avec sa hiérarchie des rôles, ses intrigues, ses coquetteries. Pour retrouver la puissance critique du texte quant aux formes et valeurs établies, j’ai transposé l’action dans le contexte artistique actuel et réécrit une partie des scènes à partir des improvisations des acteurs : ces six personnages en quête de leur existence débarquent au milieu d’une répétition d’aujourd’hui, où une troupe en pleine crise discute des notions de personnage, de fiction, de texte, d’auteur…, et se demande comment le théâtre, avec de si vieux outils, peut rester en phase avec son temps. Autant de questionnements qui se trouvent de nos jours au cœur des débats esthétiques. Dans mon travail de metteur en scène, je n’ai jamais renoncé à ces notions. Alors que les formes scéniques non fictionnelles, non narratives, non psychologiques, se multiplient sur scène, voire dominent, cette pièce peut interroger avec humour nos pratiques.
Votre approche pose donc aussi la question du statut de l’auteur ?
S. B. : Elle me paraît centrale en effet. Elle marque une différence essentielle entre les écritures conçues à même le plateau, souvent à partir d’improvisations collectives, ou bien mêlant des matériaux textuels divers, non dramatiques, et la mise en scène d’un texte théâtral, fondée sur un dialogue imaginaire avec l’auteur. Plus généralement, le statut d’auteur devient de plus en plus flou et se dissout dans la masse de la production des expressions individuelles. Cette évolution reflète celle d’une société où chacun se revendique créateur et peut, grâce aux nouveaux moyens de communication comme internet, publier ses écrits, ses films ou ses musiques. Pour ma part, je me considère comme un interprète, ce qui ne bride pas la créativité. Les grands auteurs sont ceux qui, à travers leur vision, nous donnent accès au monde.
