Dans Quartier lointain, un homme d’affaires se retrouve soudainement projeté au sein de sa propre histoire, de son propre passé. Ainsi, un jour comme n’importe quel autre, alors qu’il est de retour dans sa vile natale pour se recueillir sur la tombe de sa mère, il effectue une plongée dans sa mémoire et touche à l’émotion de son enfance. Récit d’une transformation et d’une réconciliation intérieure, le manga de Jirô Taniguchi (auteur né en 1947, à Tottori, au Japon) a obtenu le prix Alph-Art du meilleur scénario au festival d’Angoulême 2003. « Je suis fasciné par le talent de Taniguchi, déclare le metteur en scène Dorian Rossel. Comment réussit-il, avec sobriété et une délicatesse infinie, à faire surgir une émotion aussi forte ? Cela renvoie à la question du spectateur, centrale dans ma démarche : comment naissent les sensations, comment entrent-elles en relation avec les pensées, comment créer un terrain pour activer l’imaginaire, générer des émotions complexes et contradictoires ? Quartier lointain est un objet étranger au théâtre, une matière unique à explorer, un matériau qui questionne mon métier et me pousse à trouver des solutions scéniques que je n’ai encore jamais éprouvées. » Des solutions qui passent par l’invention d’un « langage pertinent pour transposer le dessin, la fable et ses ellipses, ses silences, ses non-dits », par l’invention d’un « langage qui produit des images ».
