C’est une histoire que les amateurs de mangas japonais et les (nombreux) lecteurs de Jirô Taniguchi connaissent bien. L’histoire d’un père de famille de 48 ans qui, en 1998, à l’occasion d’un voyage en train depuis la gare de Kyoto, fait un saut dans le passé pour se retrouver en 1963, dans le corps de l’adolescent qu’il était à l’âge de 14 ans. Projeté à un moment charnière de son histoire familiale, cet homme d’affaire revisite la réalité de ses souvenirs à l’aune de ses pensées et de ses réflexions d’adulte.Publié en deux volumes par les éditions Casterman (en 2002 et 2003), récompensé par de nombreux prix (dont l’Alpha’Art du meilleur scénario et le Prix Canal BD, au Festival d’Angoulême 2003), Quartier lointain est devenu une œuvre culte dont la popularité a largement dépassé le seul cercle des amateurs de bande dessinée. Parmi les admirateurs de ces deux albums se trouve le metteur en scène franco-suisse Dorian Rossel, qui transpose les dessins en noir et blanc de Jirô Taniguchi au sein d’un univers théâtral aux couleurs éclatantes.
De belles images
Servie par deux compositrices-instrumentistes (Patricia Bosshard, Anne Gillot) et six comédiens (Rodolphe Dekowski, Mathieu Delmonté, Xavier Fernadez-Cavada, Karim Kadjar, Delphine Lanza, Elodie Weber), cette adaptation scénique de Quartier lointain (le manga a également été adapté au cinéma, en 2010, par le réalisateur belge Sam Garbarski) donne corps à un théâtre essentiellement visuel et narratif. Un théâtre qui, pour se révéler assez fidèle aux principaux aspects de l’œuvre originale, est bien loin d’en atteindre la profondeur, la poésie, la force singulière. L’engagement des interprètes et les jolies images de la représentation cinématographique élaborée par Dorian Rossel ne suffisent en effet pas à faire surgir l’univers captivant de l’artiste japonais. Car, à trop vouloir dire, à trop vouloir montrer, à vouloir nourrir son spectacle d’une théâtralité surabondante, le jeune metteur en scène en oublie de laisser un peu de place à notre imaginaire… Confinant à l’exercice de style, cette version dramatique de Quartier lointain manque de trouble et d’émotion. Elle nous maintient à distance du plateau et des enjeux humains qu’elle tente pourtant d’investir avec beaucoup d’honnêteté.
