« Selon moi, le théâtre de Feydeau n’est pas un théâtre réaliste, explique Gian Manuel Rau dans la note d’intention qu’il signe pour le livret de présentation de son nouveau spectacle. Les personnages sont dans l’exagération et l’hystérie. Ils nous entrainent davantage vers l’absurde que le réalisme. » Un absurde, une hystérie et une exagération qui, dans la représentation que crée aujourd’hui le metteur en scène suisse au Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, prennent le chemin de motifs racoleurs et de bouffonneries lourdaudes. Est-ce seulement pour échapper au réalisme que Gian Manuel Rau a empêtré Amour et piano, Un Monsieur qui n’aime pas les monologues, Fiancés en herbe et Feu la mère de Madame dans tant de facilités ? Le procédé semble pour le moins inapproprié… Car, si ce cadre boulevardier paie auprès de certains spectateurs, il en laisse d’autres plus que circonspects. Une partie du public rit, une autre attend que cela passe, tentant de débusquer derrière les lourdeurs de la représentation (qui se pique d’une modernité convenue) la finesse que le metteur en scène attribue, pourtant, à l’œuvre de Georges Feydeau.
Un trop-plein d’effets anecdotiques
« Le théâtre de Feydeau est drôle, bien sûr, mais aussi très fin et humain, déclare ainsi Gian Manuel Rau. » Au vu du travail présenté sur la scène de la Comédie-Française, cette précision est loin d’aller de soi. Car de finesse et, dans une moindre mesure, de drôlerie et d’humanité, ce spectacle manque singulièrement. On en arrive même à se demander si le metteur en scène est sincère, s’il croit véritablement en ces textes. Cette manière de les barioler aussi grossièrement fait en effet penser à une tentative de camouflage, ou d’amendement. En procédant de la sorte, Gian Manuel Rau piétine toute la subtilité de l’humour de Georges Feydeau, toute l’acuité du regard que cet auteur a porté sur l’humain. Les quatre Comédiens français embarqués dans cette aventure — Anne Kessler, Laurent Stocker, Léonie Simaga et Christian Hecq — n’ont rien à se reprocher. C’est même grâce à eux que parviennent à se dessiner les rares évidences démontrant que ces comédies en un acte valent bien mieux que ce que laisse apparaître la représentation. Et c’est là le principal reproche que l’on fera à Gian Manuel Rau : faire passer ces pièces pour des œuvres vieillottes et caricaturales, des œuvres de genre cantonnées aux aspects les plus primaires du vaudeville.
