« Le vaudeville tel qu’on le connaît et qu’on le voit joué très souvent a besoin d’être dépoussiéré » dit le jeune metteur en scène Gian Manuel Rau qui s’empare, avec l’équipe de créateurs qui a désormais l’habitude de le suivre, du matériau déjanté et loufoque que constitue l’œuvre de Feydeau dont il entend exploiter autant la gravité angoissée que le sens « du rythme et de la farce ». Il confie à quatre comédiens d’envergure (Anne Kessler, Laurent Stocker, Léonie Simaga et Christian Hecq) cette partition ciselée dont il compare les mots à des fléchettes à projeter « sans déclamation et sans effets particuliers », « sans fioritures et le plus direct possible » afin d’assurer l’efficacité de ses effets comiques. Gian Manuel Rau fait à cet égard le pari d’un formalisme strict, afin de faire fonctionner au mieux les rouages de la mécanique théâtrale de Feydeau. En effet, dit-il, « le théâtre de Feydeau n’est pas un théâtre réaliste. Les personnages sont dans l’exagération et l’hystérie. Ils nous entraînent davantage vers l’absurde que le réalisme. »
Nouveaux territoires d’écoute
Dans Amour et piano, Le jeune Edouard, provincial monté parfaire ses mœurs à Paris, confond l’adresse de la Dubarroy, mondaine dont il espère le soutien, et celle de la jeune Lucile, qui attend son nouveau professeur de piano. Un monsieur qui n’aime pas les monologues est, selon Gian Manuel Rau, « un monologue admirable sur le théâtre et la façon démodée de jouer un texte en le déclamant ». Fiancés en herbe met en scène les interrogations de René, onze ans, et d’Henriette, neuf ans, sur la véracité des Fables de La Fontaine. Enfin, le célébrissime Feu la mère de Madame expose les malentendus nés de la confusion entre l’escalier et l’ascenseur et la gauche et la droite ! Sans pause ni rideau, les quatre pièces se solidarisent en un seul spectacle, « la musique contribuant également à faire fusionner ces histoires entre elles » grâce à la création sonore de François Thuillard et à l’originalité de l’onde Martenot. Le but est en définitive, par la musique comme par le reste des propositions, d’ouvrir « de nouveaux territoires d’écoute » de Feydeau.
