Des dialogues à foison, des scènes d’anthologie, des personnages héroïques et brutaux, des exaltés lumineux et des incorruptibles dont la droiture ignore la courbe jusqu’à la rigidité implacable : Quatrevingt-Treize, dernier roman de Victor Hugo, charrie l’histoire de France dans le fleuve tumultueux de sa langue et offre au théâtre l’occasion d’une évocation riche en émotions. Pour transcrire « ce fond rageur, voyageur, peuplé de milliers d’hommes » qui sert de cadre aux aventures du Marquis de Lantenac, de ses compagnons et de ses ennemis, Jean-Michel Hannecart a peint soixante-quinze tableaux en blanc, noir et gris, projetés sur un écran offrant écho et profondeur à la scène. Cinq comédiens racontent et jouent en correspondance avec les images de l’artiste-peintre, créant un face-à-face envoûtant et poignant d’où surgissent la mer, les coups de canon, le chant des oiseaux et les roulements de tambour d’une histoire épique et poétique : dans le souffle de la tempête révolutionnaire s’élèvent la parole formidable et les contradictions sanglantes des adorateurs de la liberté.
