Depuis dix ans, le quatuor Caliente touche le Tango Nuevo de son style clair et sensible, accordant depuis dix ans ses influences classiques et l’univers d’Astor Piazzola. « Si nous sommes légataires du tango de bal, prévient en souriant Michel Berrier, violoniste du Quatuor, notre public n’est pas un public de danseurs, ou alors il faudrait un chorégraphe un peu allumé ! » Leur prochain album, « Encuentro » (à paraître en avril 2011 chez Aeon / Harmonia Mundi), rapproche les compositions tardives de Piazzola, initiateur et maître incontournable du genre, et de Gustavo Beytelmann, musicien argentin à la croisée du jazz et du tango, un cheminement artistique audacieux pour des musiciens venant de la musique classique. « Une manière de placer notre répertoire dans une contemporanéité après avoir recherché l’atmosphère du tango nuevo des années 60. »

Sur l’album et sur scène, le quatuor a invité le guitariste jazz Laurent Colombani, donnant six cordes plus jazzy à leur interprétation. « Pour un musicien classique, le tango est une porte de liberté, une musique qui ne se prend pas au sérieux malgré l’exigence du genre. Si l’enseignement classique nous a apporté la maîtrise de l’instrument, le tango nous procure un plaisir de jeu immédiat, une possibilité d’improvisation, une écoute entre musiciens. » Une souplesse artistique qui tient sans doute aux racines populaires et métisses du tango, et à l’aisance fluide procurée par le talent des interprètes.
