Le quatuor à cordes a depuis longtemps sa place au Théâtre de la Ville, où les fidèles se nomment Kronos Quartet, Quatuor Takács ou encore Quatuor de Tokyo. Nouveaux venus parmi ces prestigieux aînés, les Finlandais du quatuor Meta4 jouent ensemble depuis 2001. Ils se sont depuis imposés dans les concours internationaux (Moscou en 2004, Vienne en 2007) et nourrissent la riche vie musicale finlandaise (invités réguliers du festival de Kuhmo, ils assurent la direction artistique de celui d’Oulunsalo). Pour leurs débuts parisiens sur la scène des Abbesses, ils proposent un programme austro-hongrois très cohérent, depuis le Quatuor n° 60 en la majeur de Haydn (1788) jusqu’au Premier Quatuor « Métamorphoses nocturnes » de György Ligeti, créé à Vienne en 1958 et largement influencé par Bartók, en passant par le Premier Quatuor de Brahms de 1873.
