La musique pour quatuor à cordes n’a jamais eu autant d’interprètes talentueux pour la servir. Des festivals spécialisés voient le jour, à l’exemple de celui de Crozon, Quatuor à l’ouest. Des quatuors spécialisés se forment également. Parmi ces derniers, le quatuor Chiaroscuro a choisi de concentrer ses efforts sur la période classique, revisitant la musique des contemporains de Mozart sur instruments d’époque. A l’auditorium du Louvre, ces jeunes musiciens interpréteront Les Dissonances, le « tube » de Mozart en la matière, ainsi que le Quartetto Serioso de Beethoven, annonciateur de la dernière période du grand maître. Un autre quatuor vient d’arriver sur les scènes internationales grâce à sa victoire au concours de Bordeaux, en 2010 : le quatuor Zemlinsky. Au théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, il fera lui aussi le point sur la première école de Vienne avec un programme réunissant Haydn, Mozart et Beethoven.
