« Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est ce qui reste du mouvement… pas le mouvement lui-même, pas le mouvement pour le mouvement, mais ce qu’il signifie, le sens qu’il révèle, avec les à-côtés, les débris, les résidus, les différentes couches, la prolifération autour… sa disparition et sa résurgence… ». Décidément, William Forsythe sans cesse découd les fils qui corsettent la danse et ses motifs imposés pour en révéler le dessein essentiel. Le chorégraphe américain installé en Europe depuis bientôt quarante ans a radicalement bousculé les codes classiques et poussé les corps au seuil de la rupture, affolant le mouvement par une virtuosité jouissive et une rigueur implacable. D’Artifact, pièce créée en 1984 à son arrivée au ballet de l’Opéra de Frankfort qu’il dirigea durant vingt ans, à Three Atmospheric Studies en 2007 ou à ses récentes installations, William Forsythe continue de réinventer son art jusqu’à disloquer la gestuelle et défier le chaos.
Deux œuvres essentielles
Quintett, composé en 1993 sur la balade déchirante de Gavin Bryars, Jesus’ blood never failed me yet, enchâsse les courses, les chutes, les trajectoires qui à jamais s’effleurent, tressent peu à peu la voie d’une hypnotique litanie. Traversée par le deuil, cette pièce dégage pourtant une vitalité poignante. Workwithinwork, créé en 1998 sur les Duetti per due violini de Luciano Berio, décline solos, duos et autres trios selon les rets invisibles d’une architecture précise. Lignes pures, vélocité du geste, cambrures extrêmes, arabesques soudain cassées déjouent de la grammaire académique. Ce ballet où résonne la réminiscence de Sérénade de Balanchine inscrit son entêtante beauté en clair-obscur. Portées par le ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon qui entretient avec William Forsythe un fructueux compagnonnage, ces deux œuvres ravissent les sens emportés par l’élan de la danse.
