Après Passé – je ne sais où, qui revient et Au pied du mur sans porte, Lazare achève sa trilogie avec Rabah Robert – Touche ailleurs que là où tu es né, triptyque construit autour du personnage d’un jeune garçon, Libellule, et de sa famille. « Les trois pièces traversent une partie cachée de l’Histoire de France. Je ne raconte pas l’Histoire de France, je raconte les trous. », dit Lazare. Confrontés à la disparition du père, Libellule, sa mère et ses sœurs tâchent de combler les trous. La mère se relève la nuit pour peindre des tableaux à la Van Gogh, et les enfants essaient de remonter le fil historique jusqu’à la conquête de l’Algérie et à Bugeaud qui osa affirmer que « le respect des règles humanitaires fera que la guerre en Afrique risque de se prolonger indéfiniment », pour justifier les célèbres « enfumades » que la langue des colonisateurs appelaient du doux nom de pacification. De langue, justement, il est toujours question chez Lazare : c’est en elle que surgit son théâtre : « C’est la bataille que j’ai, moi, entre la poésie et le fait de ne pas avoir été à l’école, une lutte perpétuelle. D’où la confrontation des langues dans mon écriture. Ce n’est pas un être qui écrit, ce sont des êtres qui parlent. »
