Comment caractérisez-vous les trois volets de votre trilogie ?
Rachid Akbal : Dans le premier volet, un enfant construit son imaginaire algérien à travers les histoires de sa mère et plonge dans les souvenirs d’un conte populaire. C’est une histoire d’amour pour une héroïne : la mère et la mère patrie. Dans le deuxième volet s’exprime l’amour d’un enfant pour son père. Baba la France (mon père la France) raconte l’exil d’un immigré qui arrive en 1948 en France pendant la guerre d’Algérie et se fait emporter par la spirale de la guerre, alors que lui est simplement venu construire sa vie d’homme. L’écriture cyclique passe du passé au présent. Dans le troisième volet, j’ai voulu parler des enfants de l’immigration de la troisième génération, qui ont vingt ans aujourd’hui, et sont souvent élevés dans le culte du pays et le mythe du retour. Kaci, personnage présent dans les trois pièces, a 50 ans. Il rentre en Algérie pour marier son fils versé dans la pratique musulmane. Mais chercher une épouse à son fils est un prétexte. Il se souvient de son propre passé.

Comment Kaci vit-il ce retour au pays après 25 ans d’absence ?
R. A. : Tout le passé refait surface, son malaise et ses errances, ses amours et ses colères. Il se souvient de son adolescence de junkie. Il se souvient de son service militaire en Algérie, qu’il a dû effectuer car étant né avant 1962, il ne pouvait pas être français, conformément aux accords d’Evian. Kaci a participé au reboisement de l’Algérie et a planté des arbres sur une montagne. Il se souvient d’Aïcha, prostituée, son amour de jeunesse assassinée par les islamistes lors des terribles massacres de Relizane, dénombrant environ mille victimes. La fiction et la réalité se mêlent, une bande sonore et des séquences vidéo réalistes dont de multiples images d’archives rendent compte de ce mélange, que Julien Bouffier met en scène avec aussi une performeuse, Margarida Guia. Les rires et les silences pesants se succèdent.
Comment se définissent son identité et son appartenance ?
R. A. : Il est doublement immigré. C’est difficile pour un immigré de se retrouver en Algérie en tant que Français, et difficile d’être immigré algérien en France, d’autant que ce sont deux sociétés différentes, à de nombreux égards. Cependant je veux ménager à la fin une ouverture vers un nouveau possible, loin des drames meurtriers et de la guerre civile qui a plombé les années 90.
