C’est à même la vie que Stefan Kaegi prélève la matière de son théâtre. Comme pour débarbouiller le plateau de ses artificieux faux-semblants et biais culturels, il met en scène des gens ordinaires qui ne « jouent » rien d’autres qu’eux-mêmes. Après les passionnés du modélisme, les femmes pilotes de Formule 1, les camionneurs bulgares, les téléphonistes indiens ou encore les enfants d’expatriés, il continue d’explorer notre réalité mondialisée et s’intéresse aujourd’hui aux muezzins du Caire, la ville aux 30 000 mosquées. Découvrant au hasard d’une tournée que bientôt les myriades de voix qui, cinq fois par jour, appellent à la prière seront remplacées par une diffusion radio d’une trentaine de muezzins dûment sélectionnés, l’artiste Suisse est parti là-bas en quête de cette tradition promise à disparaître. « L’appel à la prière n’est pas défini mélodiquement par le Coran et chaque muezzin lui donne sa voix, son interprétation. Les muezzins ont donc une grande liberté de ce point de vue, explique-t-il. « Cette centralisation de l’appel, en cours depuis plusieurs années, est un processus technique mais aussi religieux, politique, puisque tout est placé sous la direction et le contrôle du ministère de la Religion. ».
« Experts du quotidien »
Sur la scène pudiquement recouverte de tapis, quatre vrais muezzins racontent leur itinéraire. L’un, aveugle, fait deux heures de route en minibus pour venir jusqu’à la mosquée. L’autre, fils de paysan, conduisait autrefois des chars et passe maintenant méthodiquement l’aspirateur sur les tapis. Le troisième, électricien, est invalide depuis un grave accident. Le dernier, culturiste, est vice champion du monde en déclamation du Coran. Recrutés sur place, ces « experts du quotidien » dévoilent leur album familial, leurs occupations et leur mission journalière, qui s’impriment en photos et vidéos projetées en toile de fond. Sensément délivrées de la fiction pour donner les faits bruts, les paroles de ces « vrais » gens ont pourtant dû passer le tamis des Imams « bienveillants ». Sans doute est-ce là la contradiction intrinsèque de ce projet, qui, si habilement nettoyé de toute question politique et bridé par les interdits et l’autocensure permanente, peut devenir théâtre officiel…
