Virtuose du sarod, puissant luth à cordes pincées dérivé du rebâb afghan, Rajeev Taranath est un disciple direct et indiscuté du légendaire Ali Akbar Khan, maître insurpassable de l’instrument, lui-même fils d’Allauddin Khan, fondateur de la célèbre école instrumentale Senia Gharana de Maiwar. Il apparaît donc comme le dépositaire d’une longue et prestigieuse tradition. D’abord professeur de littérature à l’université, ce spécialiste de T.S. Eliot décide de se consacrer pleinement à la musique à la faveur d’une rencontre décisive avec Ravi Shankar qui, impressionné par son talent, l’encourage à devenir joueur de sarod à plein temps. Pour ce premier récital en France, Rajeev Taranath sera accompagné par Nayan Ghosh aux tablas, dans une formule dépouillée et ouverte propice à l’expression de son style fougueux, de son invention rythmique et de son sens de l’improvisation.
