African Rythm Trio / New Morning
Né sur le sol américain, à Brooklyn, en 1926, Randy Weston perçoit d’emblée la dimension africaine du jazz grâce à son père d’origine jamaïquaine qui l’initie à la musique par ses mots : « Mon fils, tu es un Africain né en Amérique. Tu as des millénaires d’histoire derrière toi ». Nourrie par sa grande connaissance des civilisations africaines et par de nombreux voyages sur le continent (Nigéria et Maroc en particulier), la musique de cet artiste fasciné par ailleurs par Coleman Hawkins et Thelonious Monk prend très tôt l’apparence d’une réflexion sur l’identité et la mémoire. Dès 1958, sa grande suite « Uhuru Africa », puis « Blue Moses » (son plus grand succès inspiré par la musique des Gnawas du Maroc), témoignent de cette obsession et inspiration africaines qui l’animent encore à 86 ans après plus de cinq décennies sur scène. Avec Alex Blake (basse) et Neil Clarke (percussions).
