“Rastamonk Vibrations” est le sous-titre de l’album Wareika Hill publié par Monty Alexander en 2019. L’idée : revisiter la musique du génial Thelonious Monk à l’aune du ska ou du reggae, les rythmes de l’île natale de Monty Alexander qui, depuis plusieurs décennies, a peaufiné sa fusion enivrante de pulsations rasta et de swing. Plutôt convaincant sur disque, le propos devrait s’avérer sous les doigts du pianiste communicatif. À 78 ans, le natif de Kingston n’a plus grand-chose à prouver et il s’offre aussi le plaisir… de chanter. D’où ces « Love Songs » annoncées en en-tête du concert, qu’illustre également un album (le dernier en date, sorti l’été dernier) intitulé Love Notes. Monty Alexander se fait crooner, d’une voix qui n’a certes pas le coffre d’un Frank Sinatra mais qui reparcourt avec délice les grands standards issus des comédies musicales, infusés, là aussi, aux rythmes de la Jamaïque.
