Raymonda fut créé en 1898 à St-Pétersbourg, par Marius Petipa. Le ballet, fondé sur une trame narrative dont la simplicité est presque troublante, surprend et émerveille les spectateurs : il invente sans retenue des liens jubilatoires entre lyrisme et folklore, académisme et caractère. Les spectateurs, transportés dans l’univers d’un conte médiéval, sont surpris et émerveillés. Noureev fut à son tour séduit par cette ambiance et par la musique de Glazounov. Il travailla à plusieurs reprises – dès les années 1960 – sur ce ballet et en donna sa version définitive en 1983, avec le ballet de l’Opéra de Paris. C’est cette version qui est présentée actuellement à l’Opéra.
Une remarque à l’attention des ballettomanes : deux artistes invités, Maria Alexandrova et Ruslan Skvortsov, venus spécialement du Bolchoï, tiendront les rôles principaux certains soirs (la distribution est accessible sur le site internet de l’Opéra).
