Déjà à l’affiche du festival d’Automne en 2013, Rebecca Saunders (née en 1967 à Londres), ancienne élève de Wolfgang Rihm, présente une œuvre nouvelle conçue sur le principe du dialogue entre la musique et l’espace, préoccupation majeure de la compositrice. Conçue d’abord pour l’architecture contemporaine de la Kammermusiksaal de la Philharmonie à Berlin, sa partition se déploie aujourd’hui dans l’espace de l’Église Saint-Eustache à Paris. « Si ma pièce fonctionne dans des acoustiques aussi opposées que ces deux-là, elle fonctionnera partout » souligne Rebecca Saunders. Conçue d’après Ulysses de James Joyce (dont elle reprend le célèbre monologue intérieur de Molly Bloom, dernière partie du roman), sa partition réunit deux pianos et une soprano. « On peut considérer ce monologue comme une sorte de collage littéraire, comme un tressage de sentiers innombrables, fait de narrations, de pensées et de moments, portés par l’énergie sans pitié d’un flux infini. Un instantané, pris au moment où rien de se passe, juste avant que l’on s’endorme, que l’on sombre dans le crépuscule de l’inconscient » confie la compositrice. Avec l’Ensemble Musikfabrik, Donatienne Michel-Dansac (soprano) et Enno Poppe (direction).
