Née en 1902 à Riga, la pianiste, compositrice et poétesse Lucija Garuta est venue, comme tant d’autres artistes, se nourrir de l’effervescence parisienne dans les années 20, avant de devenir l’une des figures majeures de la musique lettone, avec en particulier une cantate patriotique, Dieu, ton pays brûle, bannie sous l’ère soviétique et retrouvée dans les années 80. Si elle a arrêté sa carrière de virtuose dans les années 40, elle n’en a pas moins continué à écrire pour son instrument, à l’instar d’un Concerto en fa dièse mineur que David Kadouch fait redécouvrir au public français. La pièce est associée à l’un des piliers du répertoire, la Symphonie n°6 en si mineur op. 74 de Tchaïkovski. Cette œuvre testamentaire au pathétisme puissant, reflété dans le surnom qui lui a été attribué, présente la particularité de se conclure sur un Adagio aux allures de requiem – comme presque vingt ans plus tard la Neuvième de Mahler. Associant des étudiants de l’IEM d’Aix-en-Provence, l’Orchestre national Avignon-Provence est dirigée par sa cheffe Débora Waldman.
