Connaissiez-vous le travail du Theater HORA depuis longtemps ?
Jérôme Bel : Non, je ne connaissais pas cette compagnie. C’est leur dramaturge qui m’a proposé de travailler avec eux. J’ai commencé par refuser, pensant que jamais je ne pourrais travailler avec des acteurs avec des handicaps mentaux… Par curiosité, j’ai cependant demandé à voir des vidéos de leurs spectacles. Cela a été un choc. J’ai donc proposé de les rencontrer quelques jours à Zurich, où ils travaillent. Après cette rencontre, j’ai décidé de faire un spectacle avec eux.
Comment la période de création s’est-elle déroulée ? Aviez-vous une idée de trame pour la pièce ?
J. B. : Je crois que j’ai essayé de comprendre le choc, la forte émotion que la présence sur scène de ces acteurs m’avait procurés. Je n’avais aucune idée de ce qu’ils pouvaient faire ou ne pas faire. Je leur ai demandé de faire des choses très simples, et j’ai gardé les réponses qui me semblaient les plus pertinentes. Le spectacle raconte d’ailleurs le processus de création ; je voulais que le public comprenne comment nous avions travaillé. Je ne les ai pas du tout dirigés.
Dans vos précédentes pièces, notamment avec Véronique Doisneau et Cédric Andrieux, vous avez mis en place un mode de travail singulier entre chorégraphe et interprète. Le fait de travailler avec les comédiens du Theater HORA modifie-t-il les règles de ce "documentaire théâtral" ?
J. B. : Je ne voulais pas continuer cette série de travaux avec les acteurs du Theater HORA. L’aspect documentaire est toujours présent car ce qui continue de m’intéresser, c’est la réalité des interprètes : je ne leur demande pas de jouer autre chose qu’eux-mêmes. Ce sont leurs individualités qui sont mises en scène. Mais ces acteurs sont beaucoup moins « articulés » que les danseurs avec lesquels j’ai travaillé jusqu’à maintenant ; ce sont donc d’autres stratégies qui sont employées, afin de les révéler et de comprendre ma – ou notre – relation à l’altérité qu’incarnent les handicapés mentaux.
