Composée en 1886 pour Ysaÿe, la Sonate de Franck est l’un des piliers du répertoire pour violon et piano. Dans une forme cyclique chère au compositeur belge, naturalisé français, et dont on célèbre le bicentenaire cette année, le dialogue entrelacé entre les deux solistes a pu inspirer Proust pour la Sonate de Vinteuil. Œuvre de temps de guerre à la création de laquelle en 1917 le compositeur fit sa dernière apparition au piano, aux côtés de Gaston Poulet, la Sonate de Debussy revisite l’influence de Couperin et Rameau, que l’on redécouvrait à l’époque, dans cette mosaïque de thèmes où sourd un sentiment tragique. Écrite une décennie plus tard, la Sonate de Ravel contraste par une virtuosité lumineuse et l’une des premières assimilations du jazz dans la musique européenne – le deuxième mouvement intitulé Blues. L’archet élégant de Renaud Capuçon servira idéalement ces trois quintessences du raffinement français, au côté d’un de ses partenaires de prédilection, Guillaume Bellom, figure de la relève du piano d’aujourd’hui.
