Ionesco, ça peut être l’absurde rigolo d’Une cantatrice chauve comme le tragique burlesque du Roi se meurt. Les Chaises rejoint sans conteste cette deuxième catégorie, plus noire, plus beckettienne. Dans un phare, un couple de vieux invite des convives à venir écouter, comme eux, une conférence de l’Orateur. Ils sont à l’orée de la mort, quand la vie délivre son sens ultime, ou n’en délivre pas. Et il semblerait que le Vieux ait sur ce sujet des choses à dire.
Même l’Empereur fera le déplacement
Gardons donc secrète la teneur de ce message que l’Orateur va délivrer à l’assemblée. Devant lui, des chaises vides. Car ces amis qui remplissent la salle de nos deux vieux sont des présences fantomatiques. Toute la ville paraît conviée. Une dame, un colonel, un amour de jeunesse… Même l’Empereur fera le déplacement. Les chaises prolifèrent donc comme les années, envahissent le salon, vaines et vides comme nos vies, mais tellement pleines d’importance pour le couple qui reçoit. Dans la mise en scène de Renaud Gillier, masques de vieillards et décors d’une maison décrépite suffisent à donner le ton. Le reste, c’est toute la profondeur, l’humanité du texte de Ionesco, porté par Guillaume Lanson et Alice Maïa-Lefebvre, qui donnent à cette histoire d’infinis échos.
