La Salle Pleyel réunit deux figures déjà légendaires du piano : Lang Lang et Herbie Hancock. La rencontre peut surprendre à première vue, avec d’un côté un pianiste chinois ultravirtuose, distingué pour ses lectures du répertoire romantique, et de l’autre un jazzman américain, passé maître dans l’art de l’improvisation. Et pourtant, ces deux artistes partagent une même liberté de phrasé, un même sens du spectacle. Ils se sont déjà retrouvés sur scène en 2009 au Classical Brit Awards, puis au Montreux Jazz Festival ou encore aux Arènes de Vérone. A chaque fois, des shows irrésistibles qui pourront néanmoins en agacer certains. Cette fusion entre le classique et le jazz ne risque-t-elle pas d’aboutir à un style consensuel ? Ce qui est sûr, c’est que ce type d’événement permet en tout cas de décloisonner deux genres musicaux souvent qualifiés d’hermétiques. A la Salle Pleyel, Hancock et Lang Lang ont choisi de jouer la Rhapsody in blue de Gershwin. Avec ses glissandos et son swing débridé, cette partition (ici donnée dans une version arrangée pour deux pianos et orchestre) est idéale pour une rencontre entre le classique et le jazz.
Chef énergique
Ce n’est pas un hasard si ces deux géants du clavier seront accompagnés par le chef John Axelrod, à la tête de l’Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, dont il est le nouveau directeur musical depuis septembre dernier. Le maestro américain, élève de Leonard Bernstein, met un point d’honneur à mêler différents genres musicaux, comme l’a encore rappelé son concert à Nantes avec orchestre symphonique et big band. Avec sa gestique surénergique, ce chef sait galvaniser les musiciens comme le public ! A la Salle Pleyel, il dirigera également l’Ouverture du Carnaval Romain d’Hector Berlioz et Carnaval d’Anton Dvorak. Un programme décidément festif qui prépare d’une certaine façon l’avenir de la Salle Pleyel. Une fois la Philharmonie de Jean Nouvel inaugurée, la salle de la rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré doit en effet se consacrer aux musiques actuelles, à la croisée des genres artistiques.
