Pour sa vingt-deuxième édition, les Rencontres Djazz de Nevers restent attachées à « la même exigence artistique, la même exigence de qualité, la même orientation, la même signature d’un festival dont l’image apparaît à certains comme élitaire mais qui en réalité s’est toujours ouvert sur d’autres esthétiques et disciplines artistiques, avec en permanence le souci du public » selon son directeur Roger Fontanel, désireux dans le même temps de « bousculer certaines habitudes du public pour l’amener à de nouveaux cheminements, de nouvelles découvertes… ». La programmation est marquée par la présence de nombreux musiciens de référence du jazz contemporain, de John Scofield à Paolo Fresu et de Joey Baron à Claude Barthélémy, piliers avec beaucoup d’autres (Alban Darche, Elliott Sharp, John Hollenbeck, Manu Katché, Trygve Seim, Hélène Labarrière, Sophia Domancich…) du meilleur de la scène musicale actuelle, mais aussi par des créations importantes comme l’hommage à Albert Ayler du quartet phénoménal composé de Roy Campbell, Joe Mc Phee, Warren Smith et William Parker (le 12), ou encore le projet « Le conciliabule des temps » de Pablo Cueco, maître du zarb, en collaboration avec les élèves du Département de musique traditionnelle du Conservatoire de Nevers (le 10). Un festival exemplaire, emblématique de l’exception culturelle et jazzistique française.
