Il est couramment admis de considérer l’Orfeo de Claudio Monteverdi, composé en 1607, comme le premier opéra de l’Histoire de la musique. Pourtant, 7 ans plus tôt, Emilio de Cavalieri, compositeur né à Rome en 1550, créait une œuvre qui bien que conçue sur un sujet sacré est en droit de rivaliser avec le chef-d’œuvre de Monteverdi. Sa Rapprezentatione di Anima e di Corpo voit le jour en 1600 à l’oratoire Santa Maria della Vallicella, avec un dispositif scénique complet comprenant costumes, chœurs, décors et chorégraphie. L’oratorio comprend un prologue et trois actes, et réunit des personnages allégoriques : l’Âme (soprano), le Corps (ténor), l’Intellect (alto), le Bon Conseil (ténor) et le Plaisir (alto). L’ouvrage reprend vie, en version de concert, sous la direction du chef flamand René Jacobs, musicien magicien et savant, trop rare en France ces temps-ci. Avec le Concerto Vocale, l’Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin et le Choeur de la Staatsoper de Berlin.
