Créée en 1999, la mise en scène de Laurent Pelly de Platée, ballet bouffon commandé à Rameau pour le mariage du Dauphin avec l’Infante Marie-Thérèse à Versailles en 1745, appartient aux grandes réussites, à juste titre régulièrement à l’affiche. Le metteur en scène français s’est emparé de cette histoire cruelle qui tourne en dérision les prétentions amoureuses d’une naïade laide et ridicule, se croyant aimé d’un Jupiter qui a trouvé par ce subterfuge un moyen de détourner la colère de sa jalouse épouse. Dans les décors loufoques de son acolyte Chantal Thomas, Laurent Pelly concocte un spectacle inusable comme les irrésistibles chorégraphies parodiques de Laura Scozzi. Lauwrence Brownlee endossera un rôle marqué ces deux dernières décennies par Paul Agnew et Jean-Paul Fouchécourt. Il sera entouré par la fine fleur du chant français d’aujourd’hui, sous la baguette de l’incontournable Marc Minkowski, à la tête de ses Musiciens du Louvre à chacune des reprises depuis la première série de représentations.
