Seuls un chien et un arbre reconnaissent Ulysse après les vingt années d’exil passées loin d’Ithaque. A Télémaque, trop jeune privé de son père, celui-ci doit dire qui il est ; à Pénélope, plus fidèle mais aussi rusée que son époux, il faut l’épreuve d’un lit sculpté dans le bois immuable du centre de la maison pour reconnaître le maître sous les oripeaux du mendiant. Après avoir affronté tous les monstres que les dieux ont placés en obstacles sur sa route, après s’être arraché aux bras de Calypso et à la promesse illusoire d’un amour immortel, après avoir bandé l’arc, que personne sauf lui ne savait faire plier, et ravagé les rangs des prétendants à son trône, celui qui permit que tombât par la ruse l’imprenable Ilion peut enfin vivre entre ses parents le reste de son âge… Pour René Loyon, qui signe avec Laurence Campet l’adaptation à la scène des chants XIII à XXIII du texte antique, « il ne s’agit nullement de porter un regard nostalgique sur la société pastorale et patriarcale décrite par Homère, mais de confronter ce monde ancien, qui, pour une part, est à l’origine du nôtre, à l’imaginaire contemporain ». Trois comédiens passent du récit au jeu, incarnant à la fois Ulysse, Télémaque et Pénélope, et tous les autres protagonistes de ces aventures formidables, jadis portées par la parole solitaire et enthousiaste de l’aède, aujourd’hui rendues à l’immortalité par l’incarnation scénique.
