Retour à Ithaque dans la mise en scène de René Loyon relève de l’adaptation des Chants XIII à XXIII de L’Odyssée. Auparavant, le récit légendaire d’Homère développe les dix années passées par les chefs des Grecs à guerroyer sous les remparts de Troie avant qu’ils ne reprennent la mer pour rejoindre leur patrie. Mais il en est un, Ulysse, dont Ithaque est toujours sans nouvelles puisque le héros erre une dizaine d’années encore avant son retour définitif – décidé par la déesse Athéna – sur la fameuse île rocheuse. Pendant tout ce temps et pour parer l’assiduité intéressée des prétendants installés vulgairement à demeure dans le palais d’Ulysse, la sage épouse Pénélope promet à ces derniers de s’unir à l’un d’eux quand elle aura enfin tissé sa toile, une tapisserie que la reine monte le jour pour la défaire la nuit à la lumière des torches. Or, des servantes corrompues ont averti les prétendants du stratagème. Il est grand temps que le maître rentre céans avant qu’on ne le dépossède de sa femme et de ses biens. Contre les princes orgueilleux, les amis fidèles d’Ulysse déguisé – Télémaque son fils, Eumée son porcher, Euryclée sa nourrice, Philoetios son bouvier – préparent une riposte réfléchie.
La reconnaissance suprême, ce bonheur de se retrouver dans son lit
Les jeunes arrogants ne voient pas Télémaque désarmer la grande salle du palais, un préparatif d’Ulysse à sa vengeance impitoyable pour rétablir son honneur et montrer qu’il est digne de considération contre tous les dédains et les affronts. René Loyon dirige avec tact ses trois comédiens, dont deux, Fatima Aïbout et Kevin Duplenne, passent d’un personnage à l’autre, endossant alternativement les rôles : la narratrice, l’épouse, la déesse, le fils, un prétendant, le bouvier, le porcher… Ils sont tendus obstinément à la façon de l’arc précieux d’Ulysse, que nul ne peut faire plier, si ce n’est le héros. Julien Muller, bonnet bleu ciel de marin sur la tête, incarne avec conviction et puissance cet Ulysse aux mille ruses, mais aussi un homme à l’exigence morale et personnelle élevée. Le héros a toujours pensé à son retour chez lui comme à un projet intime, la véritable gloire qui se mérite dans le pacte qu’on se donne à soi sans faillir ni faiblir. Les années d’épreuves subies ne peuvent être compensées que par la reconnaissance suprême, ce bonheur de se retrouver dans son lit fabriqué par ses propres soins dans le creux d’un olivier. C’est le moment où celui qui, croyant être Personne, renoue avec lui-même, son passé et son identité, pour redevenir tout simplement quelqu’un.
