François Rancillac fut l’un des tout premiers metteurs en scène à se passionner pour les pièces de Jean-Luc Lagarce, à tenter de faire entendre cette écriture effilée et entêtante. Retour à la citadelle en 1990 puis aujourd’hui au Théâtre de la Ville, Les Prétendants en 1992, Le Pays lointain en 2001, Music-hall depuis quelques mois dans l’agglomération stéphanoise : le codirecteur de la Comédie de Saint-Etienne est toujours resté fidèle à la langue « tout en balbutiements et sinuosités » du dramaturge prématurément disparu en 1995, aux « personnages bouleversants de maladresse et de lucidité » qui traversent les multiples strates de ses textes. Car contrairement aux lectures naïves et déficientes qui champignonnent sur les scènes françaises depuis quelques années, François Rancillac ne projette pas les œuvres de Jean-Luc Lagarce à l’endroit de petites satires sociologiques ou de comédies de café-théâtre. Laissant apparaître le silence derrière les mots, l’ombre derrière le jour, la paralysie derrière les flèches et les sourires, le metteur en scène confère à Retour à la citadelle un sens du comique mêlé de gravité des plus pertinents.
La retenue d’un rire froid et cinglant
Annonçant les thématiques de la fuite et du retour aux origines, du renversement social, de l’incommunicabilité…, Retour à la citadelle (texte publié pour la première fois en 1984) présente une succession de prises de paroles à travers laquelle se dessinent les enjeux intimes et familiaux de personnages réunis pour le retour triomphal dans sa province natale d’un fils du pays nouvellement nommé Gouverneur. Dans Music-hall, une pièce ultérieure de l’auteur, la figure de La Fille précise le sens métaphorique de cette citadelle sur le chemin de laquelle chaque protagoniste est amené à avancer : « Au fond de moi-même, en mon for intérieur, / comme cela qu’on dit ? / En ma citadelle intérieure ». François Rancillac imagine cette mise en mouvement comme un manège en clair obscur, installant ses comédiens — remarquablement équivoques — sur un plateau qui tourne, qui disparaît lors de nombreux noirs et se fige à l’occasion de quelques arrêts sur images. Un manège adroit, juste, mais un peu sage, qui pourrait encore davantage investir les empêchements, les failles existentielles vers lesquels pointe cet ensemble de trajectoires humaines touchantes et incertaines.
