Howard Barker s’est inspiré de l’Histoire des guerres du Péloponnèse de Thucydide pour écrire Révélations (The Dying of today), tragédie contemporaine prenant place dans un salon de coiffure dont le barbier s’apprête à écouter le récit « de débâcle et de mort », « de chaos et de destruction » de la bouche d’un étrange client. Mais c’est lui, l’employé, qui finalement se met à parler, devançant l’appel du drame qui est en cours. « Révélations est un concentré de tragédie », déclare Guillaume Dujardin, « tragédie antique, tragédie classique, tragédie d’aujourd’hui ». Evoquant l’intérêt majeur qu’il porte à l’écriture de Howard Barker, le metteur en scène explique que celle-ci « permet de mieux aborder les changements fondamentaux qu’ont à vivre les humains en ce début de XIXème siècle : la fin d’une forme d’humanisme, le recours systématique à la dérision, l’éloignement de l’idée de mort… ». Des changements fondamentaux qui composent, par le biais des œuvres du dramaturge britannique, une forme de « théâtre de la catastrophe ».
