Tous sont atteints, l’épidémie gagne sans que personne ne prenne conscience du danger, sauf Bérenger, qui essaie de résister : la rhinocérite transforme tous les hommes en bêtes immondes et dangereuses. Dans le contexte historique de sa création, en 1960, la pièce de Ionesco apparaissait comme une métaphore des fanatismes et des totalitarismes, et la maladie, dont il décrit les ravages, comme l’image des fascismes occidentaux. « Lorsque nous avons créé la pièce en 2004, il était possible de n’y voir que la tyrannie de la mode ou celle des mœurs, la description mécanique de certaines formes de normalisations. Aujourd’hui alors que la pièce continue de voyager, son allégorie dévoile de nouvelles forces insolites, d’autres significations propres à notre temps : les tentations de repli sur soi, le danger du nationalisme… Nous devenons rhinocéros comme ça, par peur de l’autre, par commodité, par lâcheté, par paresse… », dit Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, qui met ainsi en garde contre l’épidémie terrifiante de servitude volontaire.
