Tous sont atteints, l’épidémie gagne sans que personne ne prenne conscience du danger, sauf Bérenger, qui essaie de résister : la rhinocérite transforme tous les hommes en bêtes immondes et dangereuses. Dans le contexte historique de sa création, en 1960, la pièce de Ionesco apparaissait comme une métaphore des fanatismes et des totalitarismes, et la maladie, dont il décrit les ravages, comme l’image des fascismes occidentaux. Mais, remarque Alain Timar, « cette vision a pris une tournure différente aujourd’hui (…) à l’heure où le monde s’est transformé en une grande surface où tout peut se vendre et s’acheter ». Le metteur en scène a donc choisi d’abandonner cornes et carapaces pour proposer une lecture scénique du texte de Ionesco qui fasse écho aux maux de notre époque. « La rhinocérite se propage en nous et en silence », transformant nos esprits mieux encore que nos corps.
Enténèbrement des consciences
Plus de chemises brunes ou noires aujourd’hui, mais un enténèbrement des consciences et des comportements où la barbarie se cache derrière le masque de la civilisation et sous les oripeaux du doux commerce. Installant l’intrigue au cœur de l’entreprise, et confiant à une troupe coréenne le soin de révéler le visage du monstre sous l’apparente placidité des mœurs, Alain Timar fait naître l’effroi en tendant un miroir au monde contemporain, afin de montrer et de rappeler que « le monstre peut surgir en nous », comme l’écrivait Ionesco dans Entre la vie et le rêve.
