Après avoir quitté dans un climat de crise la fosse de la prestigieuse Scala de Milan, Riccardo Muti mène une carrière de chef invité dans les plus prestigieuses phalanges. Le public parisien l’entend ainsi régulièrement à la tête de l’Orchestre National de France. Cette fois-ci, il sera au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées avec le Philharmonique de Vienne pour un programme Haydn et Bruckner. A l’heure du courant sur instruments anciens, force est de reconnaître que ses interprétations de la musique du XVIIIème siècle sont parfois bien lisses et prévisibles. On garde un souvenir mitigé de sa direction des Noces de Figaro à l’Opéra de Vienne en 2006. Espérons néanmoins que sa classe naturelle et l’élégance de sa gestique fassent des étincelles dans la 99ème symphonie de Haydn. Mais on se réjouit surtout d’entendre le maestro dans la 2ème symphonie de Bruckner, l’une des œuvres les moins jouées du compositeur autrichien. Peu coutumier de ce répertoire, Riccardo Muti pourrait justement éviter l’écueil de l’« hénaurme » en insistant sur le sens expressif des phrasés – sa marque de fabrique.
