?uvre de jeunesse, la Messe solennelle (1824) de Berlioz fut longtemps
considérée comme perdue jusqu’à ce qu’un manuscrit soit retrouvé en 1992 dans la
bibliothèque d’une église d’Anvers. Cette partition de jeunesse, que le
compositeur prétendit plus tard avoir détruite, avait valu à Berlioz son premier
succès lors de sa création en l’église Saint-Roch. Par cette ?uvre, Berlioz
pouvait se sentir conforté dans sa décision de se consacrer à la musique, une
voie que ses parents ne l’encourageaient guère à suivre. Si cette Messe
écrite à tout juste vingt ans n?est pas exempte de longueurs et ne manifeste pas
encore le génie flamboyant du compositeur, on y trouve cependant quelques
merveilles rythmiques, chorales et mélodiques anticipant les chefs-d’?uvre à
venir tels Benvenuto Cellini ou la Symphonie fantastique. Avec
cette ?uvre, Riccardo Muti et l’Orchestre national de France poursuivent le
travail de redécouverte entamé il y a quelques années avec les messes de
Cherubini. En première partie, Patrick Messina, clarinette solo de l’orchestre,
est le soliste du Concerto de Mozart.
