Cela faisait bientôt trente ans que Riccardo Muti n’avait plus dirigé l’Orchestre symphonique de Chicago et plus de huit ans que la formation du Michigan n’était plus venue à Paris (sous la direction de Daniel Barenboïm, au Théâtre du Châtelet). La Salle Pleyel accueille l’orchestre et le chef italien pour deux concerts qui ont d’exceptionnel bien plus que ces retrouvailles. Le premier programme propose en effet la Symphonie « pathétique » de Tchaïkovski ainsi que deux œuvres de la première moitié du xxe siècle : Nobilissima Visione, superbe démonstration orchestrale de Paul Hindemith (1938) évoquant la vie de François d’Assise, et Poème de l’extase, chef-d’œuvre mystique et visionnaire d’Alexandre Scriabine (1909). Le deuxième concert réunit la Troisième Symphonie (1928) que Prokofiev composa à partir de thèmes de son opéra L’Ange de feu, la suite n° 2 du ballet Le Tricorne de Falla (1919) et deux œuvres hispanisantes de Ravel, la Rapsodie espagnole (1907) et le Boléro (1928).
