Vos deux œuvres, jouées ce mois-ci en création française par des orchestres parisiens (Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Colonne,) renvoient à vos années 90, mais aussi à la Suisse où vous êtes né, et à Londres où vous avez "grandi" musicalement… En tant que musicien, d’où pourriez-vous dire que vous venez : de quel temps, de quel territoire?
Richard Dubugnon : À la différence de Stockhausen, je ne viens pas de Sirius (rires), non, s’il faut définir mes racines, elles sont essentiellement terrestres et européennes, bien que ma mère soit née à Antioche en Turquie. Comme mes compatriotes Honegger et Franck Martin, j’ai peut-être autant hérité de la couleur et la subtilité françaises que de la structure et la force rythmique germaniques. À notre époque d’hyper-communication, mes influences ne sont pas fixes géographiquement ni temporellement. Je trouve eau à mon moulin partout, autant dans le cinema, internet, la lecture, que dans la masse écrasante de musique à laquelle on a accès. Je viens d’écrire une Folia pour violoncelle solo, basée sur le fameux thème de la Renaissance, et les harmonies complexes du jazz moderne ou des figures rythmiques électroniques de bass & drums m’influencent également.

Vous avez la réputation d’être quelqu’un de très sincère, de très intense, parfois de très direct. Vous n’avez jamais peur de prendre position avec force et passion. Vous définiriez-vous comme un compositeur "en colère"?
R. Du : Vous exagérez. Je ne suis pas en colère. Je crois cependant que l’on doit défendre son art et se battre pour ses idées. À notre époque, les débats idéologiques sont édulcorés, chacun pense à sa petite carrière plus qu’à un idéal commun et les artistes deviennent très individualistes, comme le reste de la société. Je crois faire partie de ceux qui se battent encore, convaincu que l’Art a une plus grande mission que le décoratif ou le loisir. N’oublions pas qu’aux créations de Schoenberg et Varèse, il y avait souvent des blessés ! S’il m’est arrivé en effet de dire à certains ma façon de penser, voire d’en venir aux mains, je mets cela sur le compte de mon sang méditerranéen… Je respecte beaucoup mes collègues.
Votre parcours musical va être marqué la saison prochaine par la création d’un Concerto pour violon de votre plume sous la direction d’Esa-Pekka Salonen qui a voulu diriger une oeuvre nouvelle de vous… Parlez-nous de cette oeuvre sur laquelle vous travaillez en ce moment…
R. Du : Je connais personnellement Esa-Pekka Salonen depuis quelques années, ayant joué sous sa baguette à l’Opéra (ndlr : Richard Dubugnon est aussi contrebassiste). J’aime sa musique et partage avec lui le même attachement à la couleur, au rythme et à l’harmonie. Il m’a déjà beaucoup encouragé, ayant aimé mes Arcanes Symphoniques. Lorsque je lui ai suggéré d’écrire un concerto pour violon, il a été tout de suite enthousiaste et m’a proposé de le créer avec l’Orchestre de Paris en décembre prochain à Pleyel avec la violoniste Janine Jansen. Ce sera la première fois qu’elle se produira avec lui, à Pleyel, avec cet orchestre et ce sera la première fois qu’il dirigera ma musique. Une quadruple première, en somme. Je n’ai donc aucune raison d’être en colère ! Légèrement anxieux par contre, sans doute !
