« J’avais une vingtaine d’années lorsque je suis arrivé à Paris. J’ai commencé à travailler avec Nougaro, j’ai fait beaucoup de studio… J’ai tout fait dans ce métier, jusqu’aux arrangements pour les Folies Bergères et le Moulin Rouge. Sans jamais vraiment oublier cette flamme que j’avais à l’intérieur de moi et qui était ce rêve de réaliser quelque chose de différent avec mon instrument… Mais je ne savais pas comment m’y prendre. Quand j’ai rencontré Piazzolla, j’étais très préoccupé et c’est lui qui m’a dit "Richard, il faut que vous fassiez le New Musette, comme moi j’ai inventé le New Tango". Il a senti que je devais rester assez proche des racines de mon instrument et de mes origines. Cette rencontre a été décisive pour moi. Piazzolla m’a réveillé. Sans lui, je jouerais probablement du "jazz" au premier degré, en cultivant ce complexe d’accordéoniste qui veut se guérir de l’image de l’accordéon. On peut jouer du Bach ou de la musique contemporaine à l’accordéon mais je sens davantage la nécessité de rester près de mes racines et de mon histoire. Il y a toujours eu dans mes disques des valses pseudo-musette, des tangos, des choses qui évoquent ce blues de Paris. C’est toujours en filigrane. Pour moi, c’est vital. De la même façon que malgré les emprunts au jazz ou la musique classique, il y a toujours du tango chez Piazzolla ».
