Une fois n’est pas coutume, le nouveau disque de Richard Galliano débute par un solo de trombone interprété par… l’accordéoniste en personne ! Le Niçois s’en explique : « J’ai appris le trombone au Conservatoire et lorsque je suis arrivé à Paris dans les années 70, j’en jouais beaucoup avec Nougaro par exemple. » Puis celui qui est devenu le chantre du « New Musette » a laissé le cuivre de côté pour lui préférer le piano à bretelles. « J’ai eu envie de m’y remettre et comme le splendide thème original du Parrain est joué à la trompette, je me suis dit que ce serait surprenant de commencer le disque ainsi ». La passion de l’accordéoniste pour Nino Rota, pourvoyeur numéro 1 d’ambiances musicales pour le cinéaste Federico Fellini, ne date pas d’hier. Il y a quinze ans, il avait travaillé le répertoire du maître italien avec notamment le batteur Daniel Humair, mais il n’avait jamais gravé ces mélodies sur disque car « ce n’était pas dans l’air du temps. » C’est aujourd’hui chose faite en compagnie d’un quintette de classe internationale formé par l’Anglais John Surman ou l’Américain Dave Douglas.
Une musique à la fois très gaie et très triste
« Sans le vouloir, j’ai tapé dans le mille : quand Dave est venu enregistrer, il avait sur son pupitre une photo de Giulietta Masina jouant de la trompette dans La Strada. Depuis des années il a cette photo à côté de celle de Louis Armstrong sur son bureau ». La Strada, c’est d’ailleurs le fil conducteur de ce disque où l’on retrouve pas moins d’une dizaine de thèmes tirés de ce chef-d’œuvre de 1954. « La Strada, c’est la route, la vie, le destin. Je n’ai découvert que plus tard ses autres films, mais souvent quand je joue la musique de Rota en solo, je ferme les yeux et je revois l’accordéoniste aveugle de Amarcord. » Avec cet opus, Richard Galliano veut rappeler à quel point Nino Rota « n’était pas un rigolo, mais un grand symphoniste ». Il précise : « J’ai vu récemment un reportage où on lui demandait quelles directives Fellini lui donnait. Il a répondu : écrire une musique à la fois très gaie et très triste. C’est exactement ce qu’il fait dans Huit et demi. » Mais surtout ce projet a réveillé une vieille envie chez lui : écrire de concert une B.O. avec un cinéaste. Et pourquoi pas avec Bertrand Blier, son « voisin » ? L’appel est lancé !
