Après le très réussi Bal de Kafka, écrit par Timothy Daly et mis en scène par Isabelle Starkier, la collaboration se poursuit entre l’auteur australien et la metteure en scène parisienne, qui lui a demandé d’écrire une pièce à partir des thèmes de la culpabilité et du châtiment à l’œuvre dans Richard III. Une pièce pour deux acteurs de talent : Daniel Jean et Jean-Yves Le Louarn, ici sous les feux de projecteurs implacables, coincés entre le pouvoir révélateur du théâtre et son étrange illusion, entre le dévoilement ou le masque, jusqu’au dénouement. Etrange et mystérieux huis clos en effet où deux prisonniers-acteurs vêtus de gris, très différents malgré leur aspect de faux jumeaux, sont contraints de rejouer des scènes du célèbre Richard III, chaque fois qu’une sonnerie retentit. Dans cet univers carcéral absurde et infernal, ils créent donc en s’appliquant comme ils peuvent une représentation téléguidée par une autorité supérieure, qui envoie des commentaires écrits sur des feuilles volantes. A l’étroit et aux prises avec un espace de jeu et de lutte en forme d’estrade de verre et miroir, ils se démènent comme des pantins… shakespeariens, affolés et agités sur la scène bancale du monde.
Corruption sournoise
Ce duo de partenaires de scène burlesque et désespéré, formidablement interprété par Daniel Jean et Jean-Yves Le Louarn, pose de multiples questions. Sont-ils tous deux engagés dans un processus de prise de conscience ? Et pour quels crimes ? Quels rapports concevoir entre eux et Richard, le scélérat monstrueux résolu au mal jusqu’au dégoût ? Quels rapports entre eux et les traîtrises, manipulations et meurtres qui structurent la pièce shakespearienne ? « Qui est responsable : celui qui fait, celui qui le laisse faire ou ceux qui regardent ? » demande Isabelle Starkier, qui reconnaît en la pièce un « Richard III du quotidien ». On ne peut s’empêcher de penser que ces personnages ordinaires et grotesques font effectivement écho à notre monde parfois vide de repères et de valeurs, où la morale s’est de temps à autre laissée gagner par une corruption sournoise. Mais la pièce vaut davantage par le jeu qui s’y déploie, judicieusement mis en valeur par la mise en scène, que par ses questionnements métaphysiques. C’est d’abord une redoutable mise en abyme de la représentation, et une intrigante machine à jouer.
