Depuis sa création en 2006 à l’opéra de Reims, cette production de l’opéra de Ralph Vaughan-Williams a beaucoup voyagé à travers la France mais n’avait pas encore atteint les scènes parisiennes. Elle arrive à l’Athénée dans le contexte d’une redécouverte du répertoire anglais, à l’image du récent et très réussi Albert Herring de Britten à l’Opéra Comique ou du Viol de Lucrèce proposé ici-même il y a deux ans. Moins connu que son cadet, Ralph Vaughan-Williams est aussi plus marqué par l’influence française. Cela est très sensible dans Riders to the Sea (1937), où l’écriture orchestrale est parfois très proche de celle de Debussy et plus encore de Ravel, dont il fut l’élève.
Influences maritimes
Adapté d’une pièce en un acte de John Millington Synge, l’opéra de Ralph Vaughan-Williams est tout imprégné de cette atmosphère si particulière du monde des marins. Comme chez Britten – dans Peter Grimes notamment – la mer y est un espace presque divinisé, une immensité à laquelle les hommes doivent se sacrifier. D’une densité exceptionnelle, ce bref opéra est précédé des Chants de voyage que Vaughan-Williams a composés sur des poèmes de Stevenson. Judicieux prologue, chanté ici par le baryton Patrice Verdelet qui dans Riders to the Sea tient le rôle de Bartley, personnage central de l’opéra : ces voyages sont ainsi les siens, qui précèdent sa disparition dans l’océan. La mise en scène efficace et pudique de Christian Gangneron et la direction raffinée de Jean-Luc Tingaud ont déjà eu l’occasion d’être applaudies.
