Aujourd’hui tombé dans l’oubli, Alessandro Melani fut pourtant l’un des plus passionnants compositeurs romains de l’ère baroque. Avec son opéra L’empio punito, il fut ainsi le premier à faire du mythe de Don Juan un ouvrage lyrique. Mais Rinaldo Alessandrini a préféré exhumer une œuvre sacrée : Il fratricidio di Caino. Pastiche basé sur le mythe de Caïn et Abel, cet oratorio, écrit en 1683, comprend également des musiques de Bernardo Pasquini et d’Alessandro Scarlatti. D’une grande richesse mélodique, la partition requiert quatre solistes vocaux : soprano (Anna Simboli), contre-ténor (Andrea Arrivabene), ténor (Luca Dordolo), basse (Sergio Foresti). Il va sans dire que les instrumentistes du Concerto Italiano, sous la houlette du sanguin Rinaldo Alessandrini, n’ont pas leur pareil dans ce répertoire.
