A travers le désir de changement d’une femme – l’épouse devenant courtisane adulée – , la pièce décrit toutes les métamorphoses d’une société, tous les glissements, les compromissions et les hypocrisies qui caractérisent une vie collective soumise à des carcans. Nous sommes à Damas au XIXe siècle, et là se joue non seulement un combat entre tradition et modernité, entre rigorisme et anarchie, mais aussi tout un jeu de manigances et de dupes entre apparence et vérité, entre conformisme et désir de liberté, un jeu qui met la nature humaine à nu, débride les freins, et renverse les habitudes et les repères comme une révolution. Au centre de ce jeu, la place de la femme dans la cité. Une femme que nous décrit Saadallah Wannous (1941-1997), dramaturge syrien dont les engagements politiques se parent d’une grande force poétique.
Des âmes meurtries ou aveuglées
Moumina – interprétée par un homme, Benoît Lahoz, une façon de déjouer le réel – est l’épouse du Prévôt des notables. Le mufti fait arrêter le Prévôt en train de batifoler avec une courtisane, et l’épouse parvient suite à cet incident à se faire répudier par son mari. Elle ose la transgression, devient la courtisane Almassa (diamant), et met tous les hommes à ses pieds. La puissance d’Eros soumet les plus fervents et les plus puissants défenseurs de la vertu ! La cité tout entière vacille… A travers la sobriété de la scénographie et l’accent mis sur la parole, hors de tout naturalisme, la mise en scène de Fida Mohissen met en lumière des âmes meurtries ou aveuglées.
