Pianiste américain encore peu identifié dans nos contrées bien qu’il ait choisi la France comme terre d’adoption, Rob Clearfield s’est fait un nom en prenant part à la dynamique scène de Chicago, ville dont il est originaire. Actif auprès du batteur Makaya McCraven, désormais membre du quartet du trompettiste Itamar Borochov, Clearfield — jusqu’à présent relativement discret en leader — présente le répertoire d’un disque enregistré en quartet avec quelques figures de la Windy City, notamment le saxophoniste Greg Ward. Conçu comme une longue suite en cinq mouvements, à la manière d’une composition classique, ces « Ashes and Diamonds » révèlent une écriture poussée, dense et serrée, qui cherche à faire cheminer la musique à la manière d’un quatuor, en développant des parties étroitement liées les unes aux autres, assumant tensions et contrastes, embrassant au-delà du jazz tout un pan de la musique américaine abstraite et minimaliste. Servie par les remarquables talents de pianiste du compositeur et par la saxophoniste Olga Amelchenko pour l’occasion, la beauté de cette musique ravira les oreilles curieuses et exigeantes.
